I assembled and self published a book of Dad's poems as a gift for the family, especially Mother. I mentioned the book to Sharon Winkle, the director at Mead and she said that it might be an additon to the library. I asked Mother today if she would like that and she said she would indeed. So next week, I will go to see Sharon and show her the book to see if she would like to add it to the shelves. It is called " A Regular Guy's Song. " The title is from one of the poems that Dad wrote while in high school. If Sharon likes it I will take one to Sheboygan Falls also.

Gaelic Storm tonight.

Rhubarb. The first fruit of spring. I was able to harvest the first of my crop today. Memories of rhubarb date back to my childhood. We would pick those sour stalks and get a cup with sugar in the bottom. Then glory in the sour sweet taste of raw sweetened rhubarb. I don't do that anymore.

Jim LOVES rhubarb pie and today we had the first of the year. I'll share my recipe.

Rhubarb Cream Pie

Prepared 9 " Pie Crust (I have my own recipe but you CAN use a frozen or a packaged one.)

1 1/2 Cups Sugar
1/4 Cup Flour
3/4 teasp. Nutmeg
3 Eggs - slightly beaten
4 Cups Rhubarb - cut in 1" slices
2 Tblsp. Butter

Pour the rhubarb into the prepared pie crust. Blend sugar, flour and nutmeg. Add to eggs. Pour mixture over the rhubarb in the crust and bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees and cook until the custard is set. This will take from 20 to 35 minutes. Check every 5 minutes after the 20.

Yum. Yum.

A little poem for today. I will be working on making my genealogy available.

Breeze

A gentle breeze, she never slept.
Or so it seemed to us.

Her quiet strength, both sun and rain
Brought safety, warmth and trust.

Something special to report today.

On Saturday evening, St. Mary Home and School had their annual fundraiser, a spaghetti dinner with an oral auction, a raffle and a silent auction. I had purchased some raffle tickets. Last night I got a call that I had won two prizes.

The first is a really nice gift basket with candles, candy, a lovely pitcher and a cute little wooden basket. But the really fun thing was that I won the $500 tuition to St. Mary School. Tonight was the school board meeting, so I attended to collect my prize and turn the check over to the board to help any family or families who might be able to send their child or children to St. Mary with a bit of financial help. They suggested naming the fund after me but I didn't want that. However ------- I knew what to do and the Mary Deeley Tuition fund is now available at St. Mary School. Mother has done so much for the school. She was actively involved in the fundraisers to build it. Remember the Bricklayers? She sent nine children there and she even taught for a couple of years. As she says, St. Mary is the only alternative to public education in Sheboygan Falls and we are needed. It also provides an opportunity for God to be in the school for our children.

Well. I did not put a turkey on the table on Saturday morning on my hunting trip. But I cannot say it was not a successful hunting trip. Randy is such a patient guy and a good teacher. The weather was just perfect. It was cool enough that I was glad to have the long sleeves on and the funny head covering didn't bug me but warm enough that I didn't feel I wanted to shed something. We heard the turkeys gobbling both to the right and to the left in the woods but they never wandered out onto the field to feed or present a good target. I did see one fly out from the trees and accross the field. It looked big, probably a tom but he was on the fly and I could not shoot. The noise out there at dawn is indescribable. I wish I was better at identifying the bird songs. With my limited knowledge, we heard - crows, morning doves, turkeys, finches, cardinals, woodpeckers and geese. There were at least four other distinctive sounds that I cannot put to the bird. At one point two cardinals flew into the tree above me and sang their hears out. Are they EVER loud. Everything is turning green out there and it was the greatest way to start a day. Of course, getting up at 3:30AM isn't something I really want to do every day.
